When we lost our Sophie dog 2 years ago, though we were definitely devastated, it opened up
opportunities in travelling that we did not have before. Our dog was a very anxious animal and
we feared she could never tolerate being kenneled and had no other options other than the in-laws to watch her. (everyone else had pets and she was quite anxious around other dogs too and she chased cats)
I swore it would be awhile before we got another dog and yesterday, I fell in love with this little
border collie mix in CT on petfinder.com. Though I am loving being able to travel to new places with Tim and Olivia, we are not loving being sans dog. We are all animal lovers and to wait a few years makes
little sense in a way as Olivia will be out with her friends more than at home by then. On the other hand, I know of about 4 families who got dogs in the last few years that are not so happy.
The dogs either never house trained or ripped their furniture up and they wish they never did it.
A girlfriend of mine actually tried to get rid of her hyper yorkipoo several times. Sophie was great that way. She never trashed our house and once trained, she never went in the house till she was so ill at the end. It's a hard decision. Olivia keeps saying she'd rather have a dog than go on all these vacations but that is
easy to say. I have to believe that we can get a dog that is not so skittish this time. We have a wonderful,
family-owned kennel just down the street from us and friends and family that we can trade dog-sitting with too as long as this one gets on with other varmints. For once, Tim has shown some
softening in his resolve not to get another dog. He was so upset to lose Sophie that he actually
told me it was harder than being told he has cancer. Then there is also the hope that the vet bills would not reach what they did with Sophie but I think I would buy insurance this time. Sophie
blew out both her ACL's 2 1/2 years apart(she thought she was a football player, I guess) and the surgeries cost us 5 grand.Total vet bills over her life probably hit about 10 to 12K. We need to think very carefully about this but all resolve goes out
the window when you lay eyes on this little cutie. I just think it would bring so much joy to us all.
And they say being around animals lowers your blood pressure. I guess I should adopt a baker's dozen of them then. And a llama. I definitely want a llama.

Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy! Get a puppy!
'nuff said, other than - if you get a puppy before me I SHALL sulk! ;D
Oh and, I'm not surprised your friend tried to get rid of her yorkipoo! What the ... (heck)?
If... you don't want to fight the "puppy" stage think about getting a 2 -5 year old dog. Lots of them out there and they need good homes. Research the breed and the energy level. We got a Brittney Spaniel puppy, VERY HIGH ENERGY LEVEL, about 9 months ago and IF... I wasn't unemployed and able to spend LOTS of time with her it would have been a disaster! However, I was able to spend the time and now she is a great dog! She is adapting to my working schedule and it has worked. We almost named her "never" because we also said we would NEVER get another dog after losing our last one to back problems. Good luck and enjoy your new family member.
That's an adorable looking Border Collie. While you are contemplating whether to adopt, you might enjoy reading "The Art of Racing in the Rain." An adult doggy book.
John,
I read that book with my book club. You're right. It's an interesting and worthwhile read.
Paula, I didn't know you were getting a puppy!!!! How will you get it home. Will B allow it in the car?!!! :o)
And Steven, I thought about naming the pup Diva, short for the divorce she might cause me. ;o)
update: I have not heard back from the shelter yet and wonder where these pups are being fostered. I am really afraid of winding up with a pitbull mix though and looking into DNA test costs now.
So many shelters try to pass off pit mixes as something else and many times these places are finding dogs all over the south and midwest and bringing them here with no idea of their lineage.
Well, I think animals are great and if I wasn't traveling so much now, I'd think of having another something. Buuuuuut, if you are going to travel with your critter, read my recent Rant and puh-lease crate it when en route anyplace... for your safety and that of your family.
that being said... what a cute, cute face!
Denise - B promised me one after my SCT but he isn't exactly being eager. The car is a bit of an 'issue' especially after I suggested when we get the puppy it may like a trip to the beach in a bit of an overexcited open mouth engage foot moment! ;D
